Communiqué des Minorités en Turquie
Publié le :
The greek and armenian minorities in turkey have found their voice for the first time in relation to a law concerning minority foundations that is being discussed in the parliament.
This communiqué is significant in the sense that it is the first civilian initiative by the individual members of non-Muslim minorities.
A group of Turkish citizens of Greek and Armenian origin had released a Communiqué on 25 September on the controversial draft law on minority foundations which is before the Plenary. So far there have been 250 signatories to the Communiqué; but the number is growing (please see the latest list below). Today as the news items on the declaration appeared in the media, the Syriacs wanted their names added to the communiqué as well.
Text o f the Communiqué
Particularly, the recent statements of CHP on Minorities are virtually discriminatory. For the first time in Republican history, we, the Minorities are opposing to this discrimination in a civilian reaction.
We submit for your consideration the below announcement.
To the public opinion...
We, the undersigned citizens of the Republic of Turkey, - believe that the discriminatory approach voiced from the rostrum of the Parliament against we, the non-Muslim citizens of the Turkish Republic, during parliamentary debates on draft laws under the name of "9th harmonisation package" is thought-provoking, - condemn equally the approach of the ruling party, which did not take on board our demands relating to our rights and the settlement of our problems until today and explicitly admitted into being obliged to take them into consideration as a requirement of the EU accession process; as well as the approach of the opposition, which displays an outrageously assimilatory approach towards the differences that are a natural and historical part of this society, without even making the slightest contribution to the settlement of our problems.
We would like to remind to the mentality, which -during the parliamentary discussions about the articles that will doubtfully bring a solution to our problems- confessed that it considered us as "hostages" and demanded the principle of 'reciprocity': the order you are envisaging is not a democratic republic...
-As the non-Muslim citizens of the Republic of Turkey, we -those who have signatures below- call on the ruling party as well as the opposition to accept the requirements of a democratic republic and to act accordingly...
